The 70s Discography The Beach Boys deserved

Recompiling an alternate 70s Beach Boys albums fan edits has always been a labor of love for me. I wanted to share them here for all Beach Boys fans since I think that the mid-70s albums all had great songs on it but were marred by bad production and song selection (not to mention the inclination to record oldies and/or throwbacks to the "fun in the sun" era of the early 60s). Also, early albums could have greatly benefited from more Dennis Wilson compositions, the band's second best songwriter after Brian.

My new versions are an amalgam of my own personal mixes, official mixes and other fan mixes from jiggy22, soniclovenoize, seltaeb, videojpp and others that I forgot. Many thanks all for your hard work!

For these album, I've tried to create the track sequence dynamic that call back to the Sunflower, Surf's Up, Carl & The Passions and Holland era, which were "democratic" albums with a specific mood.

So let's get started with

1970 SUNFLOWER/ ADD SOME MUSIC (1970)
An Album Offering From The Beach Boys

it's 1970 and the band’s is hard at work on a follow-up to Reverberation, their last Capitol album. Their new label, Warner Bros, was eager the release the brand new album. At Brian Wilson's request, due to the enormous amount of recording, the first album for the new label will be a double album, focusing on each band members' songwriting.

The master is compiled in late July 1970 and the record is finally released on August 31st. The album received mostly rave reviews from the music press, who's officially titling the double LP "The Beach Boys' White Album). Unfortunately, the album doesn't sold well and reach number 151 on US record charts during a four-week stay, becoming the worst selling Beach Boys album at that point. Rolling Stone calls it "without doubt the best Beach Boys album in recent memory, a stylistically coherent tour de force".

The album was preceded by the singles "Add Some Music to Your Day" (B-side "Walkin") and "Loop de Loop" (B-side "This Whole World"). "Add Some Music to Your Day" peaked at number 64 during a five-week stay, while "Loop de Loop" did not chart at all.

Even after a double-album masterwork, The Beach Boys had a really tough time convincing the public of their changing image. All that would change with the arrival of a new band manager...
